3 Tips for Towards Maintaining A Healthy Relationship

Advice Seeker :
Dear April Masini,

I'm getting married in a few months, and the closer I get to the date, the more nervous I am. I really love my fiance and we have a great relationship, but I look around and see how couples end up in boring routines or getting divorced. Do you have any relationship tips or advice for things we can do to avoid turning into one of those divorced couples?

Sincerely,  Need to Keep It Fresh

April Masini's Advice :

Dear Need to Keep It Fresh,

There's love and then there's sex and knowing that they are different, and that they both need nurturing over the course of a relationship will make things easier.

  1. Get out of your own head -- and your house.

Sometimes it's easy to forget what it is you appreciate and respect about your spouse when you're inundated and overwhelmed with work or family or some other distraction. It's a good practice to change your environment to allow yourself some fresh thinking and time to reflect on what it is you do appreciate and love about your spouse.
  2. Take the time to make sex great.

Novelty is terrific when it comes to sex, but the newness that infuses chemistry between two honeymooners will wear off and to keep the X in your sex life, you have to put some time and effort into it, the same way you would into working out at the gym and taking care of your body or working at an office and taking care of an account. No work equals no progress!
  3. Take care of yourself.

It sounds so simple, but if you take care of yourself (grooming, clothing, exercise, diet, friends, etc.) then you'll be in a much better position to be a great spouse.
